Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area, 99-1849 Aiea Heights Dr, Aiea, HI 96701
One of Oʻahu's most family-doable proper hikes. Loop trail (not out-and-back) keeps kids engaged with new scenery. Mostly shaded the whole way. Sturdy 7-year-olds can complete it; 5-6-year-olds may need a turnaround at the halfway point. Picnic tables at the trailhead make the post-hike snack easy. Free + uncrowded compared to Diamond Head + Mānoa Falls.
The loop direction matters — go counterclockwise (downhill on the rougher side, uphill on the gentler ridge). Plan ~2.5–3 hours with snack stops. Bring real water (1L+ per person) — no refill on trail. Pre-Western Hawaiian heiau at the trailhead is worth a 10-minute orientation stop.
Mostly gentle but a few exposed-root sections require attention. After rain the dirt is slippery — sturdy shoes essential. Mosquitos in the wetter sections — repellent for sensitive skin. No cell service in most of the loop — tell someone your plan.
Free lot inside Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area. Park gates open 7 AM–6:45 PM (summer) / 7 PM (winter); plan to be out before close or your car gets locked in.
Restrooms at the trailhead area + picnic ground. None on the trail.
Eucalyptus + ironwood canopy covers most of the loop — among the most-shaded trails on the island. Pleasant year-round.
Anytime during open hours. Mornings (8–10 AM) are coolest; afternoons get the Pearl Harbor view light. Allow exit before park gate close.
Accessibility: Trail is dirt + roots — not stroller or wheelchair accessible. Trailhead picnic area + restrooms are ADA accessible.
