We disagree with the city dataset on 1 amenity — tap to see

We hand-author beach details from on-the-ground sources. The city dataset (Ala Moana Regional Park) is an official inventory that can lag reality. Worth a cross-check on arrival.

  • Playground: we say no; city says yes.

The city dataset may be picking up a non-traditional play feature — outdoor fitness equipment, a volleyball court, or a community play area — rather than a fenced kids' playground. Eyeball it on arrival.

What to expect

Ala Moana is the default Honolulu family beach because the reef breaks the swell before it reaches shore. The Magic Island side has a man-made swim lagoon that stays toddler-calm even on most south-swell days. Wide grass strip behind the beach for picnics and napping.

Parent notes

Magic Island lagoon is the best toddler water in Honolulu — it stays glass-calm. Park along the Magic Island peninsula and walk five minutes to the lagoon. Avoid arriving after 10 AM on weekends; the inner parking fills first.

Safety

Lifeguarded at multiple towers. Stay out of the boat-channel openings at the east and west ends of the park; rip currents can pull through them. After-the-rain brown-water advisories happen — check before getting in.

Tsunami zone

This beach sits in the Tsunami Evacuation Zone per Hawai‘i Statewide GIS. If sirens sound or shaking is felt, move inland and uphill immediately. Hawai‘i Emergency Management →
