Fully paved 2-mile out-and-back to the Makapuʻu Lighthouse overlook. Stroller-friendly, dolphins + whales in season, the most family-accessible 'real hike' on Oʻahu.
NWS forecast for this exact lat/lon — forecasts can change, re-check before you go.
Typical mid-day driving — add buffer for weekday rush hour.
Kalanianaʻole Hwy, Waimānalo, HI 96795
Best 'we want to hike with the kids' option. Paved the whole way — strollers and toddler legs both work. Switchbacks are gentle. Whale watching from December to April from the upper viewpoints. Exposed the entire route — start early or bring real sun cover. Pair with Sandy Beach or Waimānalo for a beach close.
Bring real sun cover — there is ZERO shade on the trail. Hat + sunscreen + extra water are non-negotiable midday. Whale watching is best Dec–Apr from the upper viewpoints. Toddlers in strollers do great; ones who want to walk can do it with snack breaks.
Exposed cliffs along the trail — keep kids on the trail, don't venture to the cliff edges for photos. Heat exposure is the main risk (no shade). Watch for cyclists on the access road approach.
Free lot at the trailhead. Fills by 8 AM on weekends. Overflow on Kalanianaʻole Hwy shoulder — be careful crossing.
Porta-potties at the trailhead lot. None on the trail.
ZERO. The trail is fully exposed coastal terrain. Start before 8 AM or after 4 PM for any reprieve.
Early morning (6:30–8:30 AM) for cool + great light. Late afternoon for sunset + whale spotting in season.
Accessibility: Fully paved with gentle grades — wheelchair + stroller accessible to the upper viewpoint. The final lighthouse spur drops to a smaller viewing area.
Dramatic east-side beach with the lighthouse view — strong shorebreak limits family water use to small-condition days only.
Famous shorebreak beach — beautiful to watch, dangerous to swim, not a family swim spot.
Long stretch of fine white sand on the windward coast — quieter than Kailua, with mostly gentle entry.
