1.6-mile out-and-back through Mānoa Valley rainforest to a 150-ft waterfall. Muddy, leptospirosis risk in the stream — don't let kids touch the water.
NWS forecast for this exact lat/lon — forecasts can change, re-check before you go.
Typical mid-day driving — add buffer for weekday rush hour.

Best Oʻahu rainforest hike for kids. Wide muddy path, gentle climb, banyans + ginger + giant elephant ears, ends at a real waterfall. Doable for 5+; younger kids on a back-carry. The mud is the main downside — bring shoes you'll let get destroyed. Pair with a Mānoa District Park stop for the playground reward.
Mud is the headline — assume kids' shoes + lower-leg clothing will be ruined. Many families bring a change for the car ride home. Do NOT let kids touch or enter the stream water (leptospirosis risk). Mosquitos in the lower section — repellent before you start.
Stream water carries leptospirosis bacteria — keep open cuts away, don't drink it, wash hands after. Falling rocks/branches at the waterfall — stay back from the splash basin. Trail can be slippery when wet (always, basically).
Private parking lot at the trailhead (Mānoa Falls operator) — typically $7-10 per vehicle, credit card. Small street parking on Mānoa Rd fills early. No reservation required despite some sites suggesting otherwise — it's a private lot operator, not a permit.
Porta-potty at the trailhead parking. None on the trail.
Dense canopy throughout — one of the most shaded hikes on Oʻahu. Cool year-round.
Morning (8–10 AM) before the daily Mānoa shower + before the bigger crowds. Trail handles light rain fine (you're already wet from mud).
Accessibility: Trail is dirt + roots + mud — not stroller or wheelchair accessible.
Mānoa Valley's family park — big playground, gym, ball fields, often 10°F cooler than Waikīkī thanks to the rain-catching valley.
Cool-shade neighborhood park with fenced playground, community pool, basketball + tennis — local family go-to away from tourist traffic.
